Thinking A SmartHome: Are You Smart Enough?

Alexa, dim the lights, cue the music, and serve dinner. Well, two of three isn’t bad, right?

When you choose to build a new home, you do so because you want to create something that fits you and your family perfectly. It’s a home that will tick all of your boxes in a way that an existing home could never do.

If you want a home that works harder for you, you may want to consider building a smart home. Building a new home is building a dream home so, why wouldn’t you make it as smart as possible?

It’s inevitable, people using smart tech within their home. In addition to your phone being a connected device, you have computers, televisions, and even appliances. Your smart home can have just a few gadgets or a plethora of them. It really all depends on what you want technology to do for you. What should you consider when you’re adding smart tech to your home? Let’s see!

App Control & Smart Assistants

There are fewer apps now. Many manufacturers will allow you to streamline your app and integrate with other brands. However, that isn’t the case for all of them. So, it’s important that you invest in smart tech as streamlined as possible. For example, the app for Google Home allows you total control over a multitude of devices. It means your device isn’t as cluttered with a range of apps and makes managing your smart tech more efficient.

You can use smart assistants as the central point of your smart home. Are they mandatory? Absolutely not. You don’t need Alexa or Siri, but they will make it much easier to control your devices from one central place with voice commands. These assistants can trigger your favourite Spotify playlist, dim the lights in the lounge, fire up the footie, and even trigger the start of your latest load of laundry. You can even create your own voice commands. For example, you can tell your smart assistant that it’s dinner time and this can turn the television off, strike up classical music and light the dining room.

Automated Excellence

You can have devices and apps that communicate without needing you to be the go-between. For example, your coffee machine can start brewing your morning energy burst as soon as your alarm goes off in the morning. If you wear a smartwatch, it can fire up the AC when you arrive within a certain distance of your home. Again, certain manufacturers don’t make it easy for you to link different brands. However, there are single apps that make life easier. In particular, IFTTT or If This Then That as it’s also known. Even if your gadgets and apps weren’t designed to work together, this app can make them do what you need them to do.

Benefits

  • Entertainment – you can easily link all of your streams of entertainment to smart technology, which allows you to trigger everything with voice commands.

  • Appliances – just about every appliance you need in your home is available with smart technology. You can get an alert on your phone when your laundry is done, the dinner is ready or even if the fridge door has been left ajar. Better yet, thanks to internal cameras, your fridge can let you know what you need if you left your shopping list at home.

  • Home Comfort – lights, temperature control… you can control it all. You will find many gadgets will track your water and energy usage as well.

  • Security – smart locks will allow you to check who is at your front door without the need to physically go look. You can also time-limit smart locks to ensure certain people can only access your home at particular times, think dog walkers, cleaners, etc.
