5 tips to comparing quotes

1. Apples and apples? Or apples and pineapples?

It's important when comparing builders' quotes that you are comparing like for like - apples with apples, not apples and pineapples!

Single Builder's quotes are transparent and we are more than happy to answer any questions you have. You can spend quality time with your builder to ask them anything you are unsure of, or to gain information about the building process. 

Be attentive. There is a lot of information to go through and it may be overwhelming to try and understand all the jargon and information if it is new to you.

Be sure to leave no stone unturned and to not to leave details out between builders. Minor details discussed with one builder can affect your inclusions/exclusions with another builder. Remember, apples with apples!

2. Jargon

You'll need an understanding of the different terms each builder may use. For example, extra’s, optionals, standards, non-standards, PC list, exclusions, additionals, builder's margin, variations,..

3. Hidden Costs

There are some areas that you may not be aware of where costs can occur, such as.

• Reporting: koalas, bush fire etc.
• Soil type: if your soil is reactive, it can change the price of your build dramatically. Understanding your block can inform you of any additional costs. We can arrange to visit your block before we quote to make sure the design layout of your floorplan will not incur additional charges for you later down the track.
• Environmental: passing BASIX (you'll need this certificate if you are lodging a development application in NSW for a new home) or NatHERS (will determine whether you need solar or not in your area)
• PC list – anything that may be missing from your PC List
• Excavation costs – retaining walls etc

4. The extra’s

Understanding "the extra’s" is important so that you're not surprised by the end of the building process. For example, fencing and landscaping may be included in some quotes, but may be classed as extra’s by some builders, so if you need these extra items, be sure to add them into your quote so you are not trying to find additional funds towards the end of the build.
