When building a new home, there is a lot to think about. You want the flow of your home to work for you. It must work for your family and routines. Don’t forget the bathroom! It really is one of the most important rooms in your home, even if it’s not the first one that comes into your mind when you are designing your home. You will need to consider the layout, think about your fixtures and fittings, and consider what décor and colours to utilise. Here are some top tips to get you started.
Layout
The layout is one of the most important things to consider when you design your bathroom. You have to think about who will use the bathroom, how many people will frequent it, and whether you plan to expand your family. Will there be room to manoeuvre as you bath babies? Do you need twin sinks to diffuse teens fighting over who gets to brush their teeth first? Is a shower cubicle the right option for you or do you need a bath as well? Think about how much space you will need between each fixture to ensure ease of movement if multiple people will be in the bathroom at one time.
Fixtures
While a shower will save floor space, unless you are working with a tiny area you should always choose to install a bathtub. It’s easier for bathing small children (and more than one at one time), and a great way to unwind after a rough day, too. While you are designing your dream house now, you may eventually move. A bath is going to be a selling point if it comes down to it. At least aim to have one bathtub in your home. You can create the illusion of space with wall-hung toilets, frameless shower screens, and slimline mirrors and vanities.
Colour & Decor
Tiles are the most efficient flooring and wall solutions for use in the bathroom. Think about the water, condensation, heat, and mould potential if you install carpeting and wallpaper. Tiling doesn’t mean your bathroom has to be bland. You can use patterns or colours to make an attractive room. You can also use fittings to add a touch of style. Think about how your vanity, taps, and sinks can communicate style. You can finish the room with colourful towels. Consider adding plants like English Ivy or Aloe Vera that are great for air quality and add a splash of natural colour.
Alongside the kitchen, the bathroom is the most frequented room in your home. So, it stands to reason that you should put a lot of thought into the layout, décor, and design of it. You want to be able to kick back and relax in the bath after a long, hard day. When you get ready in the morning, you want to do it in a room that inspires you! A room that guests will “ooh” and “aaah” over.
