Do you want to expand and improve your outdoor space? Are you considering increasing square footage with a deck or alfresco? When summer rolls around, we all realise just how much time we spend outdoors. Naturally, you would want to extend your living space and create an area that brings your indoors outdoors. Whether you choose a deck or alfresco, you’re making space for your family and friends to sunbathe, relax, grill, and just enjoy. So, let’s take a look at which decision is right for you!
What's the Difference?
They are not interchangeable terms. Alfresco is an outdoor space that is laid directly on the ground. It’s generally connected to the house. However, it can also be constructed elsewhere in your garden. Typically, alfresco features a concrete base, but you can use any material you like to create your foundation. Alfresco doesn’t normally feature a rail, but many today feature built-in barbecues, sitting areas, and fire pits.
Now, a deck is normally constructed from wood. You can build yours near the ground, but they’re not placed directly on it like alfresco is. There is a support system required to support the addition. You can build a deck from the lower floor of your home or an upper level. Decks are generally enclosed with railing.
Cost Comparisons
Your budget will likely heavily sway your final decision. Both projects are big ones, but many factors influence the total cost of installing either option. The size of your addition matters, as does the location, and the features, such as railings, barbecue, kitchen, seating, supports, etc.
The slope in your garden will also be a factor to consider. If you don’t have uneven ground, then you will need to level the area in order to install alfresco. In this case, a deck is likely your best bet as levelling uneven ground can increase the cost by two or three times.
ROI & Your Needs
If you plan to sell your home at any point, then you will want to think about your return on investment. Buyers love to see outside living areas ready to use.
More importantly, perhaps, is your needs.
What do you want from your outdoor space? Alfresco might be the right choice for you if you’re looking for an addition that can be incorporated into your existing landscape and the overall design. The same goes if you’d like to construct an area that’s separate from your home.
If you’re trying to spotlight a view, then a deck is a perfect option. Likewise, a deck is more suitable if you’re dealing with hills or uneven ground. If you want to create an entertainment zone, then again a deck is the right option.
No matter which option you choose, both offer a return on investment, both increase your square footage and living space, and both will improve your summer.
