Choosing Your Dream Outdoor Area Designs

If there is one thing every Australian wants, it’s an outdoor area that is an extension of their home. It’s an important living space that should be given the same consideration as every other area of your house. It’s where your children play, where you barbecue and entertain friends (all year round) and your place to relax.

While everyone else in the world is obsessed with outside-in, Australians are working on the reverse. So, how can you create your dream outdoor area?

Layout

If you get the layout right, everything else should fall into place. Now, you have to consider what you want out of your outdoor area before you decide on that layout. Do you want an inviting space that still allows you plenty of space to move around? Or, did you have something else in mind?

Regardless of what you plan to do with your space, the best way to tackle it is to create dedicated zones for each activity. There should be an area for cooking, for eating, for the relaxation and conversation after. Don’t forget about the activities. You might not have room for cricket, but lawn bowls might be a goer.

Materials

With regards to the materials you choose, you should keep the overall style of your home in mind. You want materials that will complement your home and will also work with the surrounding landscape. For example, decking is popular and people tend to choose timber for this. Many timbers don’t come from sustainable sources and are high maintenance. So, you want to think about the long-term maintenance of the materials that you use and the structures you plan to erect. There are eco-friendly decking solutions available.

Outdoor Kitchen

Barbecues are as Australian as kangaroos. No summer would be complete without a slew of them. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that you would want a kitchen in your outdoor area. You may want a built-in barbecue, prep-area, sink, and a fridge. If you’re really dreaming, consider a fireplace or a built-in pizza oven. Of course, it’s up to you to determine what’s right for you. You’ll definitely want to think about how your design can make your barbecue routine as efficient as possible.

Foliage & Technology

You can add character to your new outdoor oasis with foliage. Think about a living wall to serve as a focal point. It’s ideal for balconies, courtyards, and smaller backyards. If you have a larger garden, then you can scale your vertical wall to size. Consider a vegetable patch or herb garden. There are plenty of low-maintenance options that can add flair to your barbecue flavours.

Don’t forget smart technology! Think wireless speakers, app-controlled lighting, and more.

If you spend weekends and summer evenings outside, your outdoor area should be as comfortable to you as your lounge. What would that look like for you?
